Fertility, Pregnancy & Post Natal Care

Allowing and nurturing mothers to be and their new babies.

Fertility & Conception:

The process of giving life to life should be a conscious act and Ayurveda recognises that the physical and emotional balance of both parents is a fundamental ingredient in both conceiving and giving birth to a healthy child. For that reason 3-6 months prior to conception it is important to make conscious choices that will move you towards a state of physical and emotional balance.
Restoring balance may require changes in some aspects of your life.  Some of these will come easily and others may require small changes gradually while you explore approaches that suit both you and your partner.

In addition to addressing any specific constitutional imbalances for you and your partner some general suggestions while you are preparing for and trying to conceive include:

∞   Letting go of or reducing life activities that cause you the most stress or that are physically/emotionally draining.
∞   A daily practice of some type of relaxation or meditation technique.
∞   Gentle exercise activity e.g. tai chi or yoga, gentle walks.
∞   An outlet for expressing difficult feelings/emotions – daily journaling or maybe even counselling.
∞   Regular oil massages using warm oil that suits your constitution.
∞   Reduce travel particularly air travel.
∞   Avoid wind and cold
∞   A regular routine including a regular sleeping pattern & meals.

Pregnancy Care

As a Mother your aim is to provide an optimum environment for the development of your child and so during pregnancy Ayurveda encourages a lifestyle and nutrition that will nurture and nourish and promote peace and calmness. In addition to some general lifestyle and nutrition suggestions throughout the pregnancy Ayurveda also understands the important of introducing different foods and herbs at different stages of development to nourish and promote the development of your babies tissues and organs.

In addition to a monthly programme to suit the baby's development some general suggestions for pregnancy care include:
∞   Rise before 7.00am
∞   Self massage with warm oil – black seed sesame oil or Dywantri , a herb infused oil used for pre and post natal care
∞   Some gentle breathing exercises to promote vitality and oxygen as well as antibodies to increase the baby's immunity.
∞   Warm, nourishing  food including jaggery and ghee and eating smaller, frequent meals
∞   Eating 6-10 soaked, peeled almonds as mid morning snack
∞   Fresh fruit juice daily
∞   Eating a light early evening meal.
∞   Avoiding heavy, spicy, stimulating foods and beverages
∞   Avoiding stimulating activity and excessive exercise.
∞   A relaxation/meditation practice before bed
∞   Wear natural fabrics and light coloured clothing.

After Birth Care

Ayurveda recognises that both you and your baby need some time out after the birth. For you, this is essential to enable your body to recover from the physical and emotional effort of birth and to restore your strength so you can care for and nourish your new baby. The baby has come from a completely sheltered environment and also needs time to adjust. His/her senses are very vulnerable and should be exposed to the world gradually and gently.

For that reason the tradition in Ayurveda has been for the first 40 days after birth to be a time of nurturing and nourishment for both mother and child. They stay indoors and visitors are limited so that they can get to know each other and the babies senses can adjust to sights, sounds, smells and touch gradually. Mum is massaged with warm herb infused oil daily a to restore her strength and muscle tone and she inturn massages her baby. The mother's food is light and nourishing to stregthen her digestive system and make good quality milk for the baby.

There are many reasons why it may not be possible for you to follow aspects of this approach however if you understand and appreciate the intention then you may be able to make plans that incorporate some things. For example you can make choices about how often and where you take your baby in the first few weeks after birth. You may be able to have someone come and stay with you or visit each day so you can have 30 minutes to do a self massage. You can learn how to massage your baby. If people offer to cook for you explain that you would like simple easy to digest meals at this time eg rice and vegetables.

As an Ayurvedic Lifestyle Consultant, a mother of three and grandmother of two I look forward to supporting you during this amazing experience whether it is in your efforts to prepare for and conceive your baby, during the pregancy or caring for you both afterwards.
