Meals & Recipes
The food is a very important component of our workshops and retreats and is always a special favourite with participants. In Ayurveda food is medicine. In a traditional Indian home the Kitchen is the Hospital and the Mother is the Doctor. When you eat food that suits your constitution, looks good, smells tantalising, tastes great and is light and easy to digest you can’t help going home feeling better than when you arrived.
All retreat meals are vegetarian and are prepared and served in accordance with the principles of Ayurvedic nutrition. Wherever possible the ingredients are organic or biodynamic and sourced from local producers. For example we collect our freshly picked vegetables and organic unhomoginised milk from a local market farm and dairy on the way to the Monastery.
We endeavour to accommodate any special dietary requirements and the Registration Form provides you with the opportunity to advise us of your requirements. Wheat, gluten and dairy free options are regularly catered for.
To help you understand how to eat well for your constitution each meal will always include a brief description of what we are eating and how it suits the various constitutions. The retreats are also a great opportunity to spend some time in the kitchen for some hands on experience in Ayurvedic cooking.
According to Julie, who has been to three of our retreats, “it is the only place where you can eat and eat and eat and lose weight”.
"Cooking & eating good food is enjoyable" Val, May 2008
"I enjoyed being in the kitchen helping to prepare meals in a mindful & loving way and learning about the properties of different food" Christina, Oct 2008
"I love the new recipes" Eva, Oct 2008
"Well fed - but lighter, can't wait to get on my scales" Lola, Oct 2009
As a special gift to enable you to continue your culinary experience Mary will forward you (via e-mail) a copy of all the recipes used throughout the retreat with detailed instructions for preparing them.
